AIRTOOL (copyright by Enrico Schiratti 1996)
Version date 01.01.1996
Part A) What is this?
Part B) How do I use it?
Part C) What else do I have to know about this program?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Part A What is this?
Airtool is a quick & dirty little program that:
- lets you modify the description of FSFS planes in your Aircraft directory
- saves the FDE (FSFS Flight Model) of an aircraft to an .FDE file
- loads and writes FDE files into FSFS .AIR files
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Part B
If you aren't into long texts:
- Place this file into your FS5 main directory
- Press the <F1> key to get the help screen
- Press <Esc> to exit the program
If you are:
I nearly feel ashamed of this program, it does nothing that you couldn't
do using the FS5 menus or a hex editor... it just adds a little bit of comfort.
As expected, we find a great number of FSFS planes in online services, and
some of us like to have a minimum of ease when selecting our flying hardware
or even to want to use reference flight models for similar aircraft.
FS5 sorts the planes alphabetically, and the authors of these beauties use
different methods in naming the files. Some start with the airline name, others
with their own... I happen to like them sorted by their make.
With this little (quick and dirty) program, you can use whatever system you
want. Just place it in your main FS5 directory, start it and edit the names of
the planes by pressing return.
For instance, you can rename:
"Ho-Ho-Ho-Airlines 747-400" to "B747-400 Ho-Ho-Ho"
"747 Singalese Air Force" to "B747-400 Singalese AF"
"Boeing 747 Air Uzbekistan" to "B747-400 Air Uzbekistan"
Thus grouping all your 747s in your list, letting them come right after the
737s and before the 757s.
Adding a "J_" before the name of commercial jets would group them together
as well (got the picture? <g>)
The entering of the flight models manually can be another nuisance you can
avoid. With this program you can save one reference file for a specific
aircraft and copy it to all others of the same type.
For instance, if the "B747-400 Air Uzbekistan" flies the way you want it to,
just save the parameters to "B747400", creating "B747400.FDE". You can then
load this data into any FSFS aircraft... preferrably any 747-400 you may have.
It is easier than it sounds... I hope.
If a file has the famous read-only attribute, this program will briefly remove
it and reset it once the modification is done.
You can press the <F1> key to see what you have to do exactly. I didn't include
the description here as it normally isn't read by anyone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Part C What else do I have to know about this program?
This program *isn't* public domain, it *isn't* shareware, it *is* freeware.
I am not charging for it (and wouldn't dare to), nobody should charge for it
(and shouldn't dare to). The rights to this program remain with the author.
I consider including this program on a CD-ROM or diskette as charging for it.
Obviously, whatever text you may want to enter in the description of the
planes, the rights of the author(s) of these planes remain untouched.
I did my best to make this program as harmless as possible, but still...
make a backup copy of your planes before using it.
